The Swedish lapfund is the oldest of the native Swedish breeds and is believed to be one of the oldest breeds in existence today. It was an important companion to the Sami people of Lapland (northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and northwest Russia), who initially worked as a hunting and guarding dog and later as a shepherd companion with reindeer pets. Was in the form. A feature of Lappy Charan is the use of his vocal talent. Sami is believed to have favored the barking lappie for two reasons: the hunters were stopped from getting too close and the buck knew barking, the four-legged creature was a friend, not an enemy. The shepherd instinct is still alive and well into modern lappies.

The breed was near extinction in the mid-20th century, but was revived through the dedicated efforts of many breeders. Today, it is still a very rare breed with an estimate of around 1000–1200 worldwide, most of which are in Sweden.

A Groomer can be helpful in dealing with the large amount of fur that is shed at this time. Under no circumstances should the Swedish lapfund ever be shaved. The coat should always be maintained at its natural length throughout the year.
